proudly presents Anna Niesterowicz’s video art. Wednesday, July 30, 6 PM.

The presented films are going to be from the period 1999-2006.

Gierek (1999) is the first film by Anna Niestorowicz. The inspiration for its subject was taken from the artist’s youth, in particular the visit of Edward Gierek to her nursery school. Using the found-footage method, Niestorowicz edited the materials depicting this visit: a video showing a propaganda scene found in the archives – a meeting between the First Secretary of PZPR (Polish United Workers’ Party) and the artist as a young girl. Both Gierek and Ciemność i pleśń (2000) tackle the problem of the boundary between the private and public.

The video triptych 07 Zgłoś się (2001) is based on the cult TV series of the PRL times, whose main protagonist is inspector Borewicz – a tough guy and a lady-killer. Niestorowicz focuses on three dominant aspects of the series: fast cars (Ja w ogóle nie mam prawa jazdy), sex (Bierze mnie pan?) and women abuse (Zrób jej tak jak w kinie) which result in deconstructing the behaviour and language of the 07 Zgłoś się series.

HH (2002) has been inspired by hip hop. The artist met a group of girls associated with hip hop scene in Warsaw, who helped her in choosing 24 gestures from the body language of this subculture. The gestures have been assigned with 24 letters of the alphabet; they become the visual signifiers of the letters – the alphabet of hip hop has been constructed, later on used by the girls to tell a story about their lives and music.

Hańba (2006) depicts a room filled with propaganda, radically rightist magazines of the 1920s and 30s, confronted with anti-Semitic opinions taken from the Internet discussion.
