The presentation of Wilhelm Sasnal’s video art is the second show organised by No Local foundation as a part of ART IN CINEMA project, aiming at transferring art to the cinema in order to expand the group of its recipients and to show artists’ film is the most comfortable circumstances. The presentation will be a unique opportunity to get acquainted with Sasnal’s film projects.
Sasnal’s films comprise an important part of his art; the artist treats them as seriously as his paintings. They can be viewed in galleries and museums; sometimes they are exhibited with his paintings as an integral element of the exposition, like in Zacheta Gallery (“Years of Struggle”), or alone constitute an exhibition, like in Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, being a presentation following awarding Sasnal the Vincent van Gogh Award. The artist shows his films also at festivals: last year at „Off Festival” in Myslowice, Poland, and in May 2008 at „The GI Festival” in Glasgow. When asked about his films, Sasnal place them somewhere between artistic films and a music videos.
The beginning of his adventure with filmmaking Sasnal describes as follows:
When I started making films I was a member of a film club at Nowohuckie Centrum Kultury; I didn’t care for making etudes or samples. What I really wanted was to get to know the tool itself – a film camera, to learn the technology. I didn’t have my own camera, they gave me one, it was just a Krasnojarsk, but still a 16mm and there was a real film-band, and I could use and test it.
For years Sasnal has not parted with his film camera; the effect is a tape-recorded, personal vision of the reality. The surrounding world – music, relatives, travels, private situations are filtered through the artist’s imagination and recorded on a 16mm film. The plate is full of emotions, faint visions, radical experiments, memories and fragments of narrations provoking the viewers to search for a story and build personal interpretations.
