ART IN CINEMA

“Art in Cinema” project is an experiment. We want to show a series of art films in the “Pod Baranami” Cinema. There are couple of reasons. Not every gallery may provide professional conditions for video projections. It may by lack of specialized equipment. The other con is fact that when coming to the gallery sometimes visitors come in the middle of projection. While for short, looped pieces it’s not a problem, in case of longer, narrative videos it blurs the reception. A cinema is the perfect place for such pieces. It’s very comfortable and one can see video film in a way that it’s meant to be seen – form the beginning to the end. It’s the environment which helps to concentrate on the film.

In Poland there is more and more interest in video art. The project came from the big request for this medium. Disciplines like painting, sculptures, installations etc. are quite accessible – one can always turn to catalogues and photo documentation – it’s much more difficult with video. There are not so many opportunities to see it, especially in appropriate environment.

It’s also very important for us how art will work in this new space. How it will be received. Will it be possible to engaged a slightly wider group of people – not only galleries visitors, but also people in general into film. Maybe this project will refresh the convention of how we present video art and who we present it to.

The project will be launched in May 2008. We plan one projection a month. It will take place in the the “Pod Baranami” Cinema. Artist taking part in the project: Wilhelm Sasnal, Tomek Kozak, Ola Buczkowska with her sister Dorota Buczkowska, Karolina Kowalska, Johanna Billing (Sweden).
