No Local Foundation invites to Fragile Boredom project exhibitions. We’re showing the works of Anna zaradny, Erik Bunger, Lawrence English, Pawel Kulczynski. Their art can’t be defined easily - no labels are appropriate here. Their exhibits will be available in Krakow’s No Local and Bytom’s Kronika starting in September.
The opening exhibition, Zaradny’s ‘Pass | ed’, is more an environment than a classic art display. It can be also talked about in connection to fluxes experiments from the 60’s - pieces fused by the visual, the processual and the audible. It brings to mind ‘Dream House’ by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeel (1962) - a fluxus piece played continually and experienced as an organism, living its life according to its own rules.
Zaradny’s project revives these ideas. It’s a piece evolving in time, both detail-oriented and accidental. A couple of motifs are prevalent - projections, that were born out of a random observation, and later - systematic recording of abstract visual occurrences; the music, composed by Zaradny as separate pieces for different images; the space, that’s never empty - there is always an object that can be looked at or sounds that can be heard. To achieve silence - as John Cage has proven - is impossible.
Time is one of the key reference points in Zaradny’s project. It exists mostly in relation between the present and the past. It appears in a symbolic transposition of events from the recording process to the present moment. The visual material has been created in an environment corresponding to the exibition’s setting. Just like it was demanding for the artist in the beginning, the viewers will also need the time, the attention and the sensitivity for everything that is fleeting, fragile and simple.
The continuity of the images and the sounds, as well as their transcendence, are important here as well. La Monte Young used to say that music is the function of time and Zaradny’s project confirms that. The project is a never-ending composition, a sort of an organism, modified by local acoustic and architectonic properties, office and city sounds, as well as the sun shining from outside.
The Fragile Boredom \1 project, a part of the Chopin Year celebrations, is financed by The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
