No Local Foundation

“Sezon Grzewczy” (“Heating Season”) was a one-day event organized by Bartek Materka and No Local Foundation to celebrate the closing of the artist’s studio at the Stary Skład Solny (the Old Salt Storehouse) in Zabłocie in Kraków. As a part of the action Materka painted a mural on a studio wall. It combined several stories and events which are linked with the place where the studio is located and ones which happened somewhere else. The date  - 1st of November – is also significant as it is the day when All Saints’ Day is celebrated in Poland.

The mural shows a snapshot which is a part of a real story of a theft of wooden grave crosses. Triviality of every-day life suddenly transformed these religious symbols into a common pile of firewood. A part of this mural was hacked off by Materka to the level of plaster on the very same day, which rendered the composition almost abstract and suggested yet another theft – this time of a picture painted on the wall.

EDITION

During the event of “Heating Season” Materka produced an edition of 30 original analogue photographs, developed in a darkroom, which show the mural with a complete version of the painting, and 30 framed slides which show the mural after the painting was hacked off and the studio interior after the finisage. Pictures are dated and signed by the artist; one edition consists of a photograph and a slide with the same ordinal numbering.

Edition is available for purchase for the price of 300 złoty
